Their “Knit & Crochet Along” (KAL/CAL) or maker efforts invite volunteers to craft items within their guidelines and send them in. Below are the essentials to know.
1. What we will be creating and why:
• Volunteers (“makers”) knit or crochet beanies and NICU blankets to donate.
• The work supports patients undergoing chemo and infants in neonatal care.
• The gratitude behind each item is as meaningful as the item itself.
2. Acceptable Items & Patterns
• Only hand-knit or hand-crocheted beanies and blankets are accepted (no loomed, fleece, tied, or sewn items).
• Use patterns from Knots of Love (they offer patterns and kits in their shop) or other free/approved patterns.
• Example: their “Big Sky Beanie” crochet pattern provides specific instructions.
3. Sizing Guidelines
• Beanies: Aim for seamless, non-lumpy styles (so they’re comfortable for sleeping).
• Sizes (approx):
• Small: 18–20 in circumference, ~ 6.5–7 in height
• Medium: 20–22 in circumference, ~ 7–8 in height
• Large: 22–24.5 in circumference, ~ 8–10 in height
• NICU Blankets: Should not be smaller than ~ 30″ × 24″ nor larger than ~ 34″ × 28″.
4. Yarn & Materials
• Use only yarns from Knots of Love’s approved yarn list (these are tested for softness and safety for sensitive or fragile recipients).
• Items must be free of fragrance, smoke, pet hair, and dander.
• Ends must be well-fastened, and the final piece should be neat (no loose threads).
**If you are concerned that you will have an issue with pet hair you are welcome to store your WIP at Creators Corner in a ziplock and work on your project on meetup days at the store. ***
